What is an Expert Advisor, and how does it work in MetaTrader 5?

Published June 3, 2026 · By the AUREUM team · 7 min read

If you’ve heard about “trading robots” or “automated trading” and want to understand what they’re about without the jargon, this guide is for you. We explain what an Expert Advisor is, how it works inside MetaTrader 5, what it can do for you and, above all, which risks you should know about before you use one.

What is an Expert Advisor (EA)?

An Expert Advisor (EA for short, and popularly known as a “trading robot”) is a program that trades the financial markets automatically, following a set of rules defined in advance. Instead of you deciding by hand when to buy or sell, the EA does it for you according to its strategy.

Think of it as a tireless assistant: it watches the market around the clock, spots the situations that meet its rules and places trades without you having to sit in front of the screen. It doesn’t get tired, it doesn’t hesitate and, above all, it doesn’t make impulsive or emotional decisions, one of the biggest mistakes people make when they trade manually.

Expert Advisors are written in a programming language called MQL5 (MetaTrader 5’s native language) and are distributed as files with the .ex5 extension, ready to load onto the platform.

How an Expert Advisor works in MetaTrader 5

MetaTrader 5 (MT5) is one of the most widely used trading platforms in the world. It’s free, and most brokers offer it. It’s where the Expert Advisor “lives” and does its work.

In essence, it always follows the same cycle:

  1. It watches the market: the EA analyzes price and technical indicators in real time (moving averages, volatility, price levels, etc.).
  2. It checks its rules: it compares what it sees with the conditions of its strategy. For example: “if these signals line up at the same time, open a buy trade.”
  3. It places the trade: if the conditions are met, it opens the position automatically, with its exit level and its risk control.
  4. It manages and closes the trade: it keeps an eye on the open trade and closes it when the time comes, whether at the profit target, at the stop loss or through a trailing stop that protects what you’ve gained.

All of this happens on its own, again and again, as long as the platform is running and connected. That’s why many users run MetaTrader on a VPS (an always-on server in the cloud), so the EA doesn’t depend on their own computer being switched on.

The benefits of automated trading

Automating your trading with a well-designed EA brings clear advantages over manual trading:

Expert Advisor risks and limits you should know about

This is where we need to be honest, because the internet is full of exaggerated promises. An Expert Advisor is not free money, and it isn’t a machine that wins without risk. Here’s what you need to be clear about:

Important

An Expert Advisor is a software tool. It does not constitute financial advice. You trade in your own account, and the responsibility is yours. The quality of an EA is measured by how it manages risk and how solid its testing is, not by how much it promises to make.

How to get started with an Expert Advisor, step by step

If you want to try automated trading, this is the usual path:

  1. Open an account with a broker that offers MetaTrader 5 and the asset you’re interested in (for example, gold / XAUUSD).
  2. Install MetaTrader 5 and log in with your account.
  3. Get an Expert Advisor you trust, with transparent testing and good risk management.
  4. Install it in MetaTrader by copying it into the right folder and loading it onto the chart.
  5. Consider a VPS so it can trade continuously without depending on your computer.
